Dear Friend,

One of my greatest honors as a Member of Congress is the ability to help fulfill the promises made to our veterans for their brave and distinguished service to our country.  I come from a family with a long and proud tradition of military service. As a veteran myself, I understand how important our work is to continually improve care and support for our veterans and as the sole Member from the Valley on the Veteran Affairs Committee, you can count on me to fight to preserve the rights, protections and benefits our veterans deserve.

We not only owe it to our hardworking families to responsibly manage the government’s finances, but our brave veterans deserve our commitment that funding for their vital programs never gets held up by gridlock in Washington.  We must always provide the best care available to all of our veterans and their families, and they receive this care in the most seamless way possible.

Last week I met with Veterans Affairs Undersecretary for Benefits Allison Hickey to discuss the Oakland VA Regional Office’s current backlog of disability claims.  I was pleased to learn about the additional staff and new management being brought on to expedite the claims process.  With additional resources and improved training, I expect to see an end to the unacceptable delays in this process which previously created years of backlogged disability claims for California veterans.  I want to assure those still waiting for their claims that I will continue to focus on the situation in Oakland to ensure the VA makes good on their commitment to bettering this process.

In addition to improving our existing VA resources, bringing new facilities closer to home will greatly enhance the level of care offered to veterans in the Valley and surrounding communities.  I was honored to join fellow veterans and supporters at the ribbon cutting for the Modesto VA Clinic, which was delivered on schedule and should serve as a model to other critical projects for Central Valley veterans.

I’ve also worked for years to bring the VA Outpatient Clinic and long-term care facility to French Camp by its anticipated completion date of 2015.  For veterans in San Joaquin County who currently drive long distances to receive certain types of specialized health care services, having this facility built on schedule is vital.  I met with VA Secretary Shinseki to personally relay the pressing need to move forward with construction of the French Camp project.  Additionally, I want to salute the efforts of the San Joaquin County Supervisors and officials who have been tireless advocates for getting the French Camp clinic completed as promised for our Valley veterans.

These new facilities are only one part of the effort to bring better care and support for our veterans to the Valley.  Congress must continue to conduct vigorous oversight of the VA and veterans’ programs to ensure they are operating as efficiently as possible.  Implementing new electronic health records and ensuring an easy-to-access benefits information system is available online will help shorten the claims process and bring the Department of Veterans Affairs into the 21st Century.

Our country has made a promise to those willing to put their lives on the line for our freedom, and during these tough budgetary times, every member of Congress needs to stand together to uphold that promise to all of our veterans.

Sincerely,

Jeff
