WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) today announced the open application period for California’s 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Students in grades 5-12 who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months are invited to apply for this year’s awards.

“The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is great opportunity to highlight and reward the achievements of our hardworking and dedicated young volunteers,” said Rep. Denham.  “I encourage all of our community’s young volunteers to apply for this distinguished honor, and I look forward to honoring the Valley’s top youth volunteers of 2013.”

To apply, young volunteers in grades 5–12 must complete applications online at http://spirit.prudential.com or www.nassp.org/spirit by November 6, 2012, and then submit them to their school principals or to the head of one of these officially designated local organizations: a Girl Scout council, county 4-H group, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA, or affiliate of HandsOn Network. Paper copies of the application form can be requested by calling 877-525-8491 toll-free.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program are sponsored by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), and were created in 1995 to recognize middle level and high school students for helping the less fortunate, promoting health and safety, protecting the environment, or volunteering in other ways. The awards are presented annually on the local, state and national level.
