Denham Statement on Surface Transportation Board Ruling in California High-Speed Rail Case

Dec 4, 2013 Issues: Transportation

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) issued the following statement in response to news that the Surface Transportation Board (STB) denied the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s request for a construction exemption in case FD 35724:

“The STB ruling is another major blow in a series of setbacks to the California project. Last week’s court ruling established that the Authority must complete the environmental review process and submit a legitimate funding plan before issuing any Prop 1A bonds. Without Prop 1A bonds, the Authority will not be able to fund the project, and today STB has denied the Authority’s request for a construction exemption and requires the full environmental review to be completed before construction can be approved. This ruling shows the project must comply with all state and federal laws before moving forward."
