It is not uncommon for the Central Valley to experience extremely high temperatures, sometimes breaking triple digits. Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year and even more heat-related illnesses. Here are some tips to combating the heat:
- Wear light colored clothing and loose layers
- Use sunscreen, sunglasses, umbrellas and hats to prevent skin and sun damage
- Limit outdoor activity and avoid direct sunlight
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car or in direct sunlight
- Keep lights off, cover windows and minimize use of the stove or oven
- Head to a cooling center (2017 cooling centers coming soon!)
- Stay hydrated
