Power plant looking for spark to reopen
The company that owns a shuttered power plant on the western edge of Tracy is trying to reopen the facility and looking for allies in Congress.
According to Greenleaf president Hugh Smith, the company bought the facility at 14800 W. Schulte Road in 2013 but had to shut it down in 2015. On Tuesday, Smith toured the idle power plant with Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock).
Denham said he believed the problems facing the Tracy Biomass plant were both regulatory and market driven.
“I believe in an ‘all of the above’ energy solution. I want to be energy independent. That starts with green energy in our own community,” he said after the tour. “I believe all of our green energies should compete and lower our overall price of energy, but this is a renewable source that we’ve got to be utilizing more in our community that helps us with the waste diversion as well.”
