Hero's Purple Heart

One of Patterson’s own enjoyed an Honor Flight recently. Roy Haury, 84, was flown to Washington, D.C. with his daughter, local realtor Naomi Jacobson. According to its website, the Honor Flight Network “is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials.”

While the trip officially included surprises, Jacobson worked behind the scenes to arrange a surprise of her own. “I worked for a few months with Congressman Jeff Denham’s office to arrange to have my dad’s older brother’s Purple Heart pinned on my dad to honor my Uncle Marvin. He died December 7, 1944 in Germany in the ramp-up to the Battle of the Bulge. He never came home…there was no closure. He was never found and he is memorialized on a wall in the Netherlands. So that was an emotional surprise for my dad and we are very appreciative of Congressman Jeff Denham for meeting us at the WWII Memorial and pinning my dad. It actually was Jeff Denham’s office who suggested it.”
