Veterans, dignitaries and community members gathered Monday morning in Hills Ferry Cemetery to pay tribute to those who have laid down their lives in defense of freedom.

The Memorial Day observance is a tradition dating back 96 years in the small rural cemetery, where those in attendance were reminded that the price of freedom is paid by those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The program also included remarks by local American Legion Commander Kris Walton and representatives of Congressman Jeff Denham and Assemblyman Adam Gray, a prayer and poem by Judy Quinn, vocal selections by Elzira Ferreira, Marsha Borrelli-Silva and Sharon Bettencourt, a wreath-laying by Audrey McIntyre and Laurie Kidder and a poem read by Urbin Ferreira.
