A cross-country bike benefit
A cross-country bicycle ride gave Steven Blackwell more than just five weeks of experiences and memories.
Because he did the ride for a cause close to his heart, the inspiration that motivated him to get started increased with every mile.
Blackwell, 18, a graduate of Millennium High in Tracy, spent a year planning his “Bike for the Brave” benefit. The ride raised money and awareness for Project Hero, a group that helps injured veterans and first responders recover from injuries and post traumatic stress.
For the final leg of the trip, he teamed up with U.S. Army veteran Kevin Binkley of Massachusetts. They set out from Lexington, Virginia, shortly after midnight on July 17 and rode together for 210 miles to the steps of the U.S. Capitol. That’s where Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) greeted them and thanked Blackwell for his support for veterans and first responders.
