Editorial: Conservative Jeff Denham’s backing of dreamers could help save them from deportation

California Central Valley Congressman Jeff Denham has been looking over his shoulder since Donald Trump was elected president. The conservative Republican from Turlock saw his 10th District go for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and his seat is now a target for Democrats next year.
Denham, fortunately, has joined forces with Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake — one of the few Republicans openly critical of Trump — on legislation to revive DACA, which Trump has ordered to end in March. Flake’s bill would remove the threat of deportation for dreamers who are enlisting in the military, going to college or supporting their families. Flake wants to pass a bill by the end of the year, returning peace of mind to the young people who are productive members of our society.
Since Flake is now scorned by fellow Republicans for publicly standing up to Trump, Denham’s solidly conservative team-player record could be the most significant force to move bipartisan DACA legislation through Congress.
